Breaking down the 30 Days
It might calm the Day One nerves to have a plan when you get started in a new role. According to research by ElementSuite and its HR Metrics that Impact report, the average 90-day turnover is almost 1 in 10. You’ll have a lot of information thrown at you, even at a company that is organised and is easing you in, so it’s helpful to make a plan for what you, yourself, is doing throughout the weeks.
Week 1
Your goals for your first week should be focussing on the most basic but important steps. Remember: the team, the organisation, and yourself.
Be sure to make your introductions to the team and try to make a good first impression. Build rapport with your team and manager and ask questions to ensure you show that you are interested in them and their roles.
Take notes of things that aren’t only about your role. What is the company culture? What are the key objectives? Different companies have different ways of doing things, so take note if they are not prioritising something another job did or are hitting you with something you wouldn’t have considered in other roles.
Create a personal checklist to get your week going smoothly, including setting up tools and email, asking for workplace essentials, etc.

Week 2
Week two should be all about gaining clarity in your role. Have a meeting with your manager that greater establishes what is expected of you in the role. Make sure you have your business and role goals and priorities lined out so that you can go on to work towards them.
This is also a good opportunity to better get acquainted with the systems of the company and workflows. Every company has their own way of doing things, so perhaps set up meetings with staff who have the most time with relevant platforms, programs and systems you will be using to understand how to use them.
Week 3
This week is all about building on that foundation. Keep strengthening team relationships with engagement and offering support wherever possible.
Keep an eye out for anywhere that you can contribute and offer help where possible. Even if it isn’t officially part of your role, if you have the ability and time, offer help to prove you are eager to work.
Try and gain feedback wherever you can. Ask how you did on tasks from the team and request a meeting with your manager to understand if you have anything to improve on.
Week 4
Finally, it’s time to reflect and plan ahead. If you have your feedback from your team and manager, how can you implement it? Are there steps you can take to better stick to their advice?
Additionally, you might want to look at how you work. Build good habits with the 30 Days of Thriving planner, such as time management, work-life balance and communication in the workplace.
You might want to add a few daily prompts to your 30 Days of Thriving planner to better tackle problems and appreciate achievements. For example, you can ask “What went well today?" and "Who can I learn from tomorrow?"
Use the 30 Days of Thriving planner to keep important notes and take it forward into the role. Do reflective exercises such as assessing accomplishments and targeting areas for growth within the role.
