Search Consultancy’s Energy division is recruiting 85 trainee dual smart meter fitters to enrol in the Trailblazers Smart Meter programme which will be running in 17 key locations across the UK.
With no prior experience required to enrol, the 12-month Trailblazers programme will see trainees employed by Search and working on a contract basis for a global powerhouse, Siemens. Trainees can expect to receive comprehensive and practical training in smart meter installation, in order to take up roles to install dual fuel meters into residential properties. The training will be delivered by Utilities Academy, the UK’s first dedicated smart meter training facility and part of the Universal Skills group.
Trainee Dual Smart Meter Fitters will earn the equivalent annual salary of £17,500 in weeks 1 to 19, which will increase to £19,000 for the remaining weeks of the 12 month period. Once trainees pass the final assessment of the programme, they will receive a sought-after qualification which will open future doors to career prospects and development.
The Smart Metering Trailblazer traineeship was initially launched in 2016, following the government rollout requiring energy suppliers to install smart meters in every home in England, Wales and Scotland by 2020. In two years, over 200 Search trainees have undergone dual fuel smart meter installation training, completed the traineeship on the Siemens contract, and are now qualified Dual Fuel Smart Meter Engineers.
This has not only increased their earning potential but also opened the doors to a wealth of career development opportunities across the UK’s Energy & Utilities sector. The success of the programme has since been recognised by the Energy & Utilities Independent Assessment Service at the House of Lords.
Callum Hack, now a qualified Dual Fuel Meter Engineer who underwent and completed the Trailblazers Smart Meter traineeship said: “The Trailblazers programme has certainly given me more opportunities to progress and earn a better salary then I did before becoming a qualified Dual Fuel Meter Engineer.”
“I’ve seen the knock-on effect in my personal life as well, to the point where my partner and I are now climbing the property ladder with our own mortgage. I'm only in my early twenties.”
Paul Mumford, Associate Director for Energy & Utilities recruitment added: “Through our partnership with the Universal Skills Group and Siemens in delivering Dual Fuel Smart training via the Trailblazer scheme, we have not only managed to substantially grow our Smart Meter workforce but also benefit the now qualified Smart Meter Engineers who have undergone our training and have been upskilled as a result.”
“Most of the trainees we took on had no formal qualifications prior to joining Trailblazers. Since graduation, they have not only secured employment within a leading business but are now earning significantly higher salaries than they would have otherwise been earning.”
“The feedback we have received from employees has been tremendous, and I’m delighted that the programme has had such a positive impact for both businesses and employees alike,” he concluded.
