Whether you're on Tinder or scoping your surroundings for the partner of your dreams, you're likely looking for someone who is 'your type' and vice versa. This same principle applies to the hunt for your dream job.
Furthermore, you're not the only one looking for something that suits your specific criteria, employers are too. It all boils down to ensuring that you both find the perfect match, and the first step is ensuring that you are 100% their type on paper.
When applying for a new job, you really want to ask yourself: What is the company looking for? Does my CV reflect this? Am I their type on paper? This certainly doesn't mean that you should be dishonest in your application, but rather showcase your existing attributes that you know will likely turn the heads of prospective employers. Remember that your CV is a hiring manager’s introduction to you, so make sure you're their type on paper.
Equally, make sure the company is also YOUR type on paper, otherwise may find yourself looking to recouple shortly after securing the role.
Much like in the game of love, it is vitally important that you, as a candidate get to know your prospective employer before pursuing a role with them, and beware of misleading companies or recruiters. Reach out to the recruiter or company that is advertising the role and inquire further about the overall culture of the business and what your job will entail.
You can use the call as a fact finding mission which will not only help you shape your covering letter around the role, but also determine whether or not the job is worth pursuing. If you find that it is, the information you get may also help you optimise your CV before you submit it. For example, make some of your skills more prominent than others in relation to the job you’re going for.
At the very least, you may put yourself in a position where the person in charge of the hiring project considers you first if another suitable role comes up in the future.
Once the initial task of sending off the CV is done, many people simply leave it at that and wait. However, you should always follow up with the recruiter or company in order to see what stage of the application process yours is at.
Of course, you shouldn’t call them a few hours after clicking send - they may not have even had the chance to review your application yet. But if it’s been between three and five business days there is no harm in following up with a quick call.
When you get in touch, you should state your name and the role that you have applied for to avoid any confusion. It may be the case that they haven’t read yours yet, but don’t worry, this call may be the catalyst that triggers them to read yours next.
The key to this type of contact is enthusiasm; if you sound eager to know more about the role, chances are you could stand out from the pile of faceless applications that the company may have received.
If you’re really not getting anywhere with your follow up calls and emails then it’s wise to move on. As a general rule you should not contact those recruiting more than three times without them contacting you. It’s good to appear keen and enthusiastic, but you don’t want to make it look like you are pestering the employer as this could have an adverse effect on your application.
As we mentioned earlier, the internet has made the job application process much easier and as a result of this agencies and employers can be inundated with copious amounts of applications for a position they have advertised.
This makes it very difficult for each applicant to be contacted if they are unsuccessful. Most organisations state that if after a period of 14 days you have not heard anything back then you have not been successful with your application.
It’s important not to be disheartened by this and not to let it affect your search for a job.
It’s important to remember that simply securing a job should not be the end goal. You’re not necessarily making a choice about what you should do forever, just what to do next. As such, you should continuously evaluate your career and determine ways in which you can change and grow, even if that does mean taking the plunge and grafting for new and better job!
