Home of the Arctic Monkeys and the first British astronaut - Helen Sharman, Sheffield is one of the UK’s leading enterprise zones for modern manufacturing and technology, making the city a land of opportunity for experienced recruiters looking to further their careers.

Initially founded in Glasgow, Search Consultancy set up shop in Sheffield over ten years ago. My association with the business goes way back, when I used to report to and work alongside our Chief Operating Officer, Debbie Caswell at a competing firm prior to her joining Search. After having a baby and taking maternity leave, my employer at the time was reluctant to provide flexible working arrangements to accommodate my childcare responsibilities.

This led me to confide in my former manager – who had since been appointed to Search Consultancy – about my situation. After submitting my CV, both Debbie and Grahame Caswell then invited me to attend a formal interview, where I was subsequently appointed to the role of Divisional Manager to establish and develop Search’s Call Centre and Office Services recruitment offering in Sheffield. The rest, as they say, is history!

In this article, I invite you to take a closer look at life inside our Sheffield office, and what you should consider before applying to work here!

What life inside Search's Sheffield office looks like

Our office is situated in the heart of Sheffield centre, just a short distance from the bustling Fargate shopping strip. Although we’re one of Search’s smaller branches, our office (in my very biased opinion) is the most beautiful of them all, with glass walls from floor to ceiling which make our working spaces airy and bright. We also have a large balcony which serves as an excellent vantage point to take in the scenic views of neighbouring buildings and cranes, as well as private meeting rooms in which to meet with colleagues, candidates and clients. This is perhaps why we get so many visitors from Search’s remaining 14 offices throughout the UK!

The city itself boasts a vibrant and diversified economy. According to recently published data published by the Nomis Official Labour Market Statistics, retail is Sheffield’s most populated industry, with approximately 124,000 employees. It’s closely followed by human health with 123,000 employees and manufacturing with 80,000 employees. As recruitment specialists in these sectors, our Sheffield branch is closely aligned with the demand of the local markets, and have access to candidates who are both experienced and qualified in manufacturing, engineering, customer service and sales.

Furthermore, the Official Labour Market Statistics have recently identified nine priority sectors within Sheffield’s economy – including advanced manufacturing and materials, business and professional services, logistics, construction and retail. Combined, these sectors have an economic output of around £13.2 billion and employ over 400,000 people. As recruitment specialists across these sectors, our job is not only to help qualified candidates find their best career prospects across these industries, but also assist local and international businesses in growing their workforce.

While life at Search’s Sheffield office may appear to be more laidback than some of our larger offices, we certainly keep ourselves plenty busy, whilst making time for excitement and fun! We work with people from all walks of life, catering for a wide range of skills and industries. In addition to meeting candidates on a daily basis, getting to know them and facilitating their future career moves, our office also receives frequent visits from clients who value our market knowledge and insight.

What makes our office a great place to work

Our office boasts a lively and energetic culture which ultimately impacts the enjoyment we get from our work, our processes and most importantly, the relationships we cultivate and develop with clients, candidates and colleagues.

Every Monday morning, managers across all divisions within our Sheffield office will hold a staff meeting, whereby employees are encouraged to discuss their weekly focus, share ideas and identify new business opportunities. We also host monthly events with a more relaxed feel, where all the teams get together to catch up, share drinks, participate in fun activities out and about the town, or undertake a number of local charity initiatives. As a company which continuously recognises and rewards the achievements of its people, the wider business will also reward exceptional performances across the UK.

But what truly makes our office a great place to work is our people – whether they be colleagues, candidates or clients. Our office currently has Search’s longest-serving Temp who has been working with us for over ten years, and of whom we are tremendiously proud!

Overall, we have a diverse range of personalities, from loud and charismatic individuals to quieter and introverted people. Each individual brings a unique set of quirks, ideas, skills and strengths to the table, which makes for an interesting and informative working environment all round. In short, no two days are the same, and we always have interesting stories to tell.

What you should consider before applying to join Search's Sheffield office

New data published in bdaily.co.uk reveals that the Sheffield City Region created 37,000 jobs between 2014 and November 2017. As it stands, there are approximately 68,000 business operating across the city region, including 650 multi-national companies. These include recent investments such as McLaren Automotive, Boeing, Jet2, TES Global and Amazon, which have all chosen to locate in the city region. Sheffield is also fast becoming an established destination for the technology and digital industry.

These developments by the international and local business community will only continue to increase demand for qualified candidates, which in turn makes Sheffield an excellent city in which to live and pursue a career in recruitment.

Although recruitment can be a tough industry, I have discovered throughout the years how much Search as a business supports the professional development of its people. After making the Sunday Times Best Companies list for the fifth consecutive year and becoming one of only six companies across the entire country to achieve Investors in People Platinum status, we pride ourselves on the first class experience we give to all of our consultants.

As part of our team, you will benefit from a rewarding bonus structure and multiple avenues for career progression. We also have an exceptional management team who will care about your career, development, earnings and general wellbeing.

If you choose to pursue a career in recruitment, why not join a business that companies and candidates want to work with? Our Sheffield office is lively, busy, fun and most importantly, successful. We have a great time doing a job we all love, with the rewards to match.
