Although Linkedin is a clear favourite in the world of recruitment, many consultants underestimate the power of social media – a platform that enables organisations to reach out to a wider demographic, thus increasing their chances of generating new business and retaining existing clients and candidates. Recruiters can remain in their peripheral vision and keep in touch with their contacts without bombarding them with calls or emails.
The benefits of using social media for recruitment include:
- Through social media, employers can reach candidates faster and at a lower cost because, as opposed to agencies, job boards or referrals, recruiting with social media is totally free.
- Social media tools allow employers to engage with their target audience and easily identify whether the candidates are a good cultural fit for the company or not.

- Passive candidates can be reached easily as they rarely visit job boards. So social media might be the only way to reach and engage with them.
- With social media platforms like LinkedIn, job seekers can be specifically targeted and chosen from followers, connections or supporters of the brand.
One of the best ways for a specialist recruiter to get to know their market and generate new business is through attending industry-specific networking events! The whole point of networking is not to meet as many people as possible, or to find one person and spend the entire hour talking to them. If you can find a few people to talk to later over coffee or lunch, develop relationships with, and possibly use as a resource to help with future recruiting efforts, then you're networking in the right way!
By getting out of the office and going to the gathering places of your target candidates, you’ll make your job much easier, and your success rate much higher. It just takes some effort and some willingness to shut off your computer and get out of the office.
