In this month’s Consultant Career Story, we speak with Eilidh Smith, Principal Recruitment Consultant in Search’s Finance team.
Eilidh joined Search just over three years ago as a graduate and has since built her career through resilience, consistency, and a strong drive to succeed. Here, she shares how she got started, what helped her progress, and what recruitment looks like day to day.
Can you tell us about your career journey so far and what led you to join Search?
Before recruitment, I was juggling three jobs. I organised music gigs in Glasgow, worked in administration for an insurance company, and spent most evenings in a pub. I’ve always been ambitious and motivated by earning more, so I knew I wanted something with bigger long-term opportunity.
I kept hearing that recruitment offered strong earning potential and fast progression, which caught my attention. I joined Search as an Associate just over three years ago.
During my first year, I continued working evenings in the pub alongside recruitment. Once I started earning commission consistently, I left the pub and focused fully on building my desk. That was a big turning point for me.
Can you talk us through your progression at Search and what helped you move forward?
My career at Search has been a rollercoaster in a good way. I started on a Business Support desk and moved to Consultant fairly quickly.
About a year and a half in, I moved into Accountancy and Finance. It meant giving up the desk I’d built and starting again in a new market. I didn’t know the sector well, so I learned by speaking to candidates, listening to clients, and doing my own research. I knew I’d make mistakes along the way.
That first year tested me. When results are slow, it’s hard to stay motivated, but consistency really matters. Turning up each day and putting the work in does pay off.
Last year, promotion wasn’t even on my radar, but all the meetings and BD I’d been putting time into started to click. My desk grew and I was promoted twice. It showed me that effort builds up over time.
What does your role involve day to day?
My role is fast paced and always changing, which is something I enjoy. I like having structure, so I start early, clear emails and plan my priorities for the day. Mornings are usually focused on candidates and business development, then I spend time engaging with clients and setting up meetings.
On a typical day, I aim to meet at least two candidates and one client face to face. Afternoons are often spent out of the office building relationships, which is a big part of the job.
It’s busy and full on, but I enjoy that momentum. I like finishing the day knowing I’ve moved things forward and created opportunities.
What do you enjoy most about working in Accountancy & Finance recruitment?
The people. I enjoy understanding what motivates candidates and helping them move forward in their careers.
I always ask candidates to prepare before meeting me and bring a list of companies they’re interested in. Most don’t, but the ones who do stand out and quickly become a priority.
I recently met a candidate who came fully prepared, and she starts with her top choice company this week. Moments like that are rewarding because you can see the impact you’ve had.
A lot of candidates in my market are ambitious and career-driven, which suits my approach.
How would you describe the culture at Search?
The culture at Search is definitely work hard, play harder. I work late nights and sometimes weekends, but the rewards are there.
It’s not just about commission. There are personal and team incentives that recognise effort and performance, which keeps people motivated.
From Monday to Thursday, I’m fully focused on driving interviews and placements. When Friday afternoon comes, I appreciate an early finish and the chance to switch off.
What would you say to someone considering recruitment or joining Search?
Recruitment isn’t easy. There will be setbacks and moments where things don’t go your way. Clients won’t always reply and candidates will sometimes change their minds.
But that’s what makes it rewarding. If you’re consistent, resilient, and willing to put the work in, you will see results. The earning potential is strong and the progression is real.
It’s demanding, but if you’re ambitious and prepared to back yourself, it’s a career that can take you further than you think.
