The 2025 job search: Your perfect match awaits

You might have already cancelled your gym membership or dropped that list of books you were working through, but you’ll know in your heart that it’s time to find that perfect one. The one that supports you, makes you feel good about yourself, and keeps your stress down. And the perfect new job is out there: you just need to find it.

But finding a new job is very different – and arguably easier – than opening the dating apps. Read on to find your perfect match and find your one true love in your career.

Why is passion important?

A lot of the sectors we represent have passion for the job as a vital requirement, even if the job description doesn’t say so. For instance, no healthcare professional could be in their role without a passion to care for others. Alternatively, professionals in construction are driven by creating tangible results.

Managers and business owners should aim for high employee engagement at all costs, as it feeds into productivity and therefore profitability. According to Gallup, globally in 2023, employee engagement was at 23%, which is 2% higher than the year before. However, when the same report shows that best-practice organisations are at 70%, and companies in the UK are at 10%, it shows there is work to be done.

It’s all about matching what drives you with your role. Consider what drives you to work at your best and think about what roles or industries would feed into that.

Reflect on your career priorities

It’s important to understand your own personal and professional priorities before you dive in so that your options align with your values. Think about where you are in your life right now and consider if your current role or path aligns with what you want in life.

  • Reflect on your career so far: What have you enjoyed? What challenges have you faced? What have you learned from those, and how did you grow?

  • Consider where you thrive: Think about what makes you at your best. What environmental factors do you thrive in? What support do you need? Do you need left alone or encouraged?

  • Think about what you want from your job: What do you value more? Growth opportunities, stability, or flexibility?

  • Dealbreakers: It’s important to highlight your job dealbreakers and must-haves in a role. This can be location, pay, flexible working, specific benefits, etc.

  • Define your career goals: Consider your short-term and long-term goals and remember to identify stepping-stone opportunities you might have your eye on.

  • Assess your strengths and weaknesses: List out your skills, passions and the types of tasks you enjoy so you can lean into them in your job search, and work to improve your weaknesses.

Find roles that fit your passion

Job satisfaction is about far more than just the salary. You could be in a job that pays well but doesn’t motivate you, and you need a role that keeps you feeling fulfilled and appreciated.

If you think your relationship with your job or career is lacking some spark, you might want to reconsider. Consider the tasks in your role or the factors of your industry that really excite you and pursue passion in your career.

You might even want to look outside your current skillset or sector. If you have enough transferable skills and experience, you can look beyond what you’re doing right now to find a new pursuit – as long as you are excited about it.

Additionally, if you are missing a skill or two from that industry, you can always upskill. Consider training within your current role or get back to the books and fill your skill gap.

Practical tips for job searching

Once you’ve got what you want clear in your mind, it’s time to start the job search. So, where do you start?

  • Use job alerts
The search for the right role can be as much work as your usual 9-5. There’s a lot to wade through that doesn’t apply to you or has a dealbreaker you don’t spot until you’re halfway through the application process.

A new role will take work, especially the perfect match role, but you can make it easier with tailored job alerts. Think of us as matchmakers sending eligible job openings straight to your inbox. Let us match your skills to the roles we think would suit you best and get rid of the rest.

  • Use job boards and networks
Every dating match starts with your profile, and finding the right job match is no different. We have often pointed out the benefits of optimising your LinkedIn profile and even creating a webpage portfolio to attract the best job roles in the market.

Engage in community groups specific to your industry and share your insights to start conversations with industry peers. Attend webinars to get your name out there and gain some industry knowledge.

  • Use recruiters
And of course, Search is there to walk you through the matchmaking journey. We specialise in connecting candidates with their dream role by matching unique skills, career goals and personal circumstances.
