It’s fair to say 2020 has been a whirlwind of a year, and full of unexpected surprises. The pandemic has reshaped the job market, and has changed how the working world operates. The concept of the workplace, and the way in which companies interview and hire candidates has been completely re-imagined, paving the way for new technology and practices.

For many people, moving into the new year marks a much needed positive change, and for some of us, this will also mean finding a new job. We appreciate how challenging it can be to find a new job and with such strong competition, how can you best navigate the job market to kick-start your career in 2021?

We outline our top 5 job search tips for 2021 below.

 1. Evaluate your transferable skills

The pandemic has meant many of us are dipping our toes into industries that we may have never even considered before, and most of us are likely to have transferable skills that lend themselves to a variety of different roles. COVID-19 has proven that a lack of industry experience isn’t always going to present a barrier to getting hired, as now more than ever, employers are looking more for candidates with adaptability.

Get started by mapping out the transferable skills you have and pair them with examples of where you have demonstrated them. Some examples of transferable skills could include:

  • Communication

  • Conflict resolution

  • Planning

  • Decision-making

  • Problem solving

Add these transferable skills in your CV and tailor them to fit to the organisation, especially if you are moving into a new industry.

2. Upskill and invest in continuous learning

Show your prospective employer that you are proactive by investing your time in expanding your skill-set and upskilling yourself. Whether it’s attending online webinars or completing courses, there are plenty of resources out there to help you get the ball rolling.

Every little helps when it comes to your CV and extra training is likely to open more opportunities for you. So whether it’s training for career development or for learning more about a new industry, go the extra mile to set yourself apart from the competition in 2021.

Check out courses and tools you can get started with below.

New Skills Academy

New Skills Academy offer over 765 accredited courses across a range of different industries and levels. Although not all courses are free, we do offer a 60% discount when you purchase paid courses from New Skills Academy through our website.

Eventbrite is great all-rounder. You can find webinars, online training courses and attend online networking events from the comfort of your own home and many of them are free!

3. Make your CV consistent and coherent

In a time when job applications are facing record highs, it’s important you do all you can tostand out from the crowd. Employers and our recruiters are faced with hundreds of CVs daily and often don’t have the time to sift through pages of text, meaning whatever you do write needs to be concise and written to the highest standard.

Think of your CV as your own advert. Adverts only pick out the key qualities about a product or service that will appeal to their target audience. For your CV, only include experience and skills that are relevant to the job role, and strategically tailor your CV based on the company. Not sending out a general CV may sound obvious, but personalisation based on the company is what is going to give you that extra edge as it shows you have invested time in researching them.

4. Create a LinkedIn profile and network online

It is estimated that up to 80% of jobs are never listed and instead are fulfilled internally or through networking. Job boards serve their purpose but to maximise your chances, creating a LinkedIn profile is a great way to attract visibility and attention from prospective employers and recruiters.

A well-crafted and highly-optimised LinkedIn profile could prove invaluable in your job search for 2021. Whilst networking in person may not be an option right now, LinkedIn is the perfect substitute and arguably a better option. Networking with the right people could land you your next job. In fact, our recruiters use LinkedIn everyday to search for potential candidates, advertise current job roles and keep our candidates up to date with upcoming jobs. With 43% of recruiters checking digital profiles often, take full advantage of this and build connections to get your foot in the door.

5. Be prepared for video interviews and assessments

The rise of remote-working means that video interviews and assessments have become an integral part of the hiring process for many businesses and this format is expected to continue throughout 2021.

Video interviews are still new to many people and with technology involved, there are a number of factors to consider when preparing for a video interview that you would not need to consider in a face-to-face interview. It is important that you stay clued up on the best practices, interview formats and software to maximise your chances of landing your next career in 2021.
