Glasgow & the Glasgow Job Market

Glasgow, with a population of around 580,000, is Scotland's largest city and is the commercial capital of Scotland. It is the UK's largest retail centre after London and is easily accessible by road, rail and air.  Glasgow is one of Europe's top 20 financial centres and is home to many of Scotland's leading businesses as well as one of the worlds to 10 cities to visit for tourists, according to the renowned ‘Frommers’ Travel Guide.

The job market in Glasgow has proven to be relatively resilient over the last couple of years and, overall, Glasgow's jobs base has grown at nearly twice the rate for Scotland and Britain over the past 10 years.  Glasgow lies at the heart of one of the UK's principal metropolitan areas with a population of around 1.8m.  Glasgow is also Scotland's largest centre of jobs and economic activity and over the past decade has seen employment in the city rise to over 400,000 with Glasgow's economy out-performing that of the European economy and the average growth rate of European city regions.

Why Live and Work in Glasgow?

Glasgow started something of a renaissance towards the end of the 20th century, which has continued apace into the 21st century.  Multi-million pound investment in the city is leading to exciting urban regeneration that continues to have a major impact on the growth of the city as a place to live and work.

Home to the City of Architecture 1999, a lasting legacy is the attention paid to the city’s many museums and art galleries, highlighting some of the finest and most beautifully preserved buildings in the Victorian heart of the city.

The Clyde waterfront is at the centre of a ten-year development plan, with a projected end value of more than £500 million.

The Homes for the Future project overlooking Glasgow Green was an innovative development that arose because of that designation. It has transformed a derelict site into a prestigious residential development, with 250 state-of-the-art homes already built and ‘phase 2’ underway.

The level of scientific research carried out at the city’s universities has helped Glasgow become the third science city in the UK in terms of funding invested in research.  Glasgow is also a leading location for hi-tech industries such as biotechnology, and public awareness of the importance of science and technology has been fostered since 2001 by the popular Glasgow Science Centre on Pacific Quay.

The area around Pacific Quay, just a short distance up the Clyde river, is also becoming a hub for digital media, with the BBC relocated to new studios alongside stv and the new ‘Hub’ building for digital and media companies - and Glasgow School of Arts’ Digital Design Studio also moving in.

In fact Glasgow’s Clyde waterfront is at the centre of a ten-year development plan, with a projected end value of more than £500 million. By 2011, 120 acres once given over to shipbuilding will create a new district incorporating residential, commercial, retail and leisure space, plus a stunning new riverside Transport Museum to sit alongside 2,500 new homes and a new retail complex.

Glasgow won another European accolade in 2003, becoming the European Capital of Sport in recognition of its many intitiatives promoting sport, participation and fitness to a more active population. In addition, this has been further recognised by Glasgow being confirmed as hosts for the 2014 Commonwealth Games which, in itself has become a catalyst for further regeneration of Glasgow’s east end where most of the venues and competitor village are being constructed.

All this activity is creating a thriving cultural hub, with hundreds of restaurants; museums such as the Gallery of Modern Art (www.Glasgowmuseums.com); and top concert venues such as the SECC (www.secc.co.uk) and the ‘O2 Academy’. In fact, Glasgow was recently voted "UK’s Coolest City" in a leading magazine poll.

The second largest shopping centre in the UK, with major shopping malls in Buchanan Galleries, Princes Square, St Enoch Centre and the Italian Centre in the city centre – and Silverburn (itself equivalent to the entire retail space in Dundee City centre) and Breahead, within a short drive - it’s little wonder tourism is booming, with upwards of four million visitors annually.
