Trainee Gas Engineers are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing pipelines and gas appliances for residences and businesses.
Working alongside a team of experienced Supervisors and Team Leaders, a Trainee Gas Engineer’s job involves carrying out checks on the equipment to ensure the safety of the appliances and ordering new parts if required. A Trainee Gas Engineer may also be expected to work in tight, confined spaces around where boilers are usually placed.
While a Trainee Gas Engineer’s job may seem straightforward on the surface, the dangerous nature of gas requires a meticulous professional that is aware of safety regulations, procedures, and the complex networks of appliances. For this reason, Trainee Gas Engineers typically work alongside experienced Field Managers in order to ensure that jobs are completed to the required health and safety standards.
Although you won’t need prior experience to pursue a job as a Trainee Gas Engineer, you’ll be required to have four GCSEs from A* to C grade, which should include Maths, English and another two relevant subjects such as Engineering, Science or Technology.
Because of the job of a Trainee Gas Engineer involves an array of physical demands, interaction with customers and numerical responsibilities, employers tend to look for individuals with strong problem solving, time management, customer service, and science and maths skills. A Trainee Gas Engineer must also demonstrate the ability to follow safety regulations and commitment to projects.
A Trainee Gas Engineer may also be expected to keep track of their work through writing up reports on the jobs they have completed within the day or at a particular property and give accurate quotes or bills. Therefore, methodological and critical thinking skills are also crucial for the job of a Trainee Gas Engineer.
As part of training, a Trainee Gas Engineer will typically be expected to work towards achieving an industry qualification and gas safe registration. An industry qualification could include an NVQ or Diploma in courses such as Domestic Natural Gas Installation and Maintenance, Domestic Plumbing and Heating or Gas Utilisation for example.
