Goodbye working unhappy, hello doing what you love. Trust our specialists to make your job search easy.
A job in smart meter reading not only involves reading dual fuel meters across private homes and commercial offices, but also capturing data on a notebook or handheld electronic device. In addition to taking smart meter readings and logging data, the job also involves reporting faulty meters and sometimes collecting payments that are in arrears. In addition to reading smart meters, the job also involves verifying readings when energy consumption appears to be abnormal.
When taking a smart meter reading, you will usually work on your own, visiting homes and places of work. In order to successfully carry out a smart meter reading and other related jobs, you must carry identification at all times and show it to customers when you visit their premises. If you're unable to gain access to a property to complete a smart meter reading job, they must arrange to call on the customer at another time or leave a note asking the customer to directly provide their own smart meter reading.
Smart Meter Readers may cover a large local area, which means the job also involves a great deal of driving to various destinations which require smart meter readings to be taken. Quite a lot of walking may also be necessary, and Smart Meter Readers usually wear a uniform. You may be given a set number of smart meter reading jobs to complete per week.
You won’t need any formal qualifications to pursue a career in smart meter reading, as on-the-job training will be provided. Employers may, however, expect you to have some GCSE achievement in English and maths.
Because a lot of driving is necessary to respond to call outs and take smart meter readings, a full, clean driving licence is a requirement for most jobs in this field. You may also have to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check, as the job involves going into peoples' homes to take electric meter readings.
Although you may not need prior job experience to take smart meter readings, there are a number of skills and attributes you will to need to become a Smart Meter Reader. These include the ability to accurately interpret smart meter readings, perform jobs to timescales and targets, as well as communicate effectively with customers. Therefore, prior experience in customer service may also be advantageous to your job prospects.
Our 12 month smart meter traineeship allows people to receive on-the-job training in reading and installing smart meters. Trainees in smart meter reading are ultimately given the opportunity to learn as they earn, working alongside experienced team leaders, supervisors and field managers to ensure the smart meter reading jobs are completed to the required standard. The smart meter training programme will however require periods of classroom-based training as well.
Entry-level jobs which involve smart meter reading often come with competitive starting salaries of around £17,000, which can increase to £30,000 upon successful probation period, training and passing a final assessment. Smart meter reading jobs also allow you to continue learning and developing new skills in order to progress to a variety of different engineering roles.
As you continue reading smart meters and building your job experience, you can continue to develop new skills and go on to become a Team Leader or Supervisor. Reading smart meters as part of your job could also open the door for you to become an energy efficiency consultant, or move into gas or electrical engineering with an energy company.
