You enter the nursing home and are greeted by the nurse in charge, you are given a handover about the residents and shown around the home. You are introduced to both the staff and residents. You are shown where the medication is kept including the controlled drugs cabinet. You are told who is able to double sign for the controlled medication. As it's your first shift the NIC gives you her number in case you have any questions. The NIC checks that you are ok then goes home. The staff on duty are really helpful and say if you have any questions then feel free to ask them and they will help you as much as they can. The medication round starts and you go to each resident and give them the relevant medication after checking you have the 5 rights. Once the medication is given you have time to sit and chat with the residents listen to their stories and have a cup of tea. After the teatime meds you help the care staff with getting everyone ready for bed. Once this is all done you double check the mars sheets to make sure that all the meds are signed for and given , you check the controlled drugs then write up the notes on the residents individual care plans. The nurse that is coming on duty arrives and you give them a handover. At the end of your shift you say goodbye . You leave the home feeling that you have had a good shift and would go back again
