An excellent opportunity has arisen to work in an analytical lab within a contract research organisation. My client is looking for someone with experience within the industry, who is confident working with a range of techniques including HPLC, NMR and GCMS. This is an exciting opportunity and will give you the chance to gain lots of new skills. This role will be ideal for those already with experience, as well as graduates looking to expand their skills.

The Role

  • Be a productive laboratory based analyst assisting with day to day running of analytical equipment
  • Supporting the chemistry teams to complete projects successfully
  • Independence when completing some tasks
  • Demonstrating appropriate application of knowledge of analytic chemistry techniques to support internal and external customers
  • Always following Health and Safety procedures, and demonstrating acceptable knowledge of, and compliance with, company policies
  • Develop an understanding of the requirements of both internal and external customers
  • Working in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate flexibility in adjusting work plans, working with self-motivation and enthusiasm

Main Duties

  • Be a productive and effective laboratory based analytical chemist
  • Perform analysis of raw and in-process materials demonstrating technical competency over a range of techniques including: HPLC, UPLC, LCMS, GCMS, NMR, GPC. Guidance will be given when using unfamiliar techniques, methods and interpretation of data
  • Select appropriate techniques for analysis with limited guidance on choice of suitable method
  • Conduct analytical method development and optimisation with support when required
  • Accurate interpretation of analytical data and draw conclusions
  • Plan day/week and creative effective milestone plans with little guidance from manager. Focus on higher priority tasks and multitask effectively
  • Communicate effectively if issues arise and show flexibility when work plans/priorities change
  • Carry out effective problem solving
  • Prepare quality reports including certificates of analysis and analytical specifications
  • Demonstrate an awareness of team goals and consistently aim to achieve them
  • Ensure instruments are performing to support R&D activities and liaise with service providers when required
  • Be familiar with the Company's policies, procedures and legal obligations regarding Health, Safety and the Environment. Challenge anyone who is not following correct procedures in the laboratory
  • Good organisational skills, including sample and data management
  • Ensure that all activities are performed in compliance with internal quality procedures
  • Conduct all communication in a professional and positive manner. Provide regular updates to your manager and communicate openly in meetings. Listen to the opinions of others and respond positively to feedback
  • Protects Intellectual Property of the company and customer at all times. Works to priorities set by the customer, completes all tasks according to their requirements
  • Where delegated and with support, act as analytical point of contact for a project, taking into account customer requirements
  • In conjunction with the team, look for continuous improvement opportunities in order to help the department reach their objectives
  • Show enthusiasm for expanding skill set and progress all tasks with the appropriate sense of urgency

Qualifications/Role Requirements

  • BSc/MSc/PhD in an analytical, chemical or related scientific field with demonstrated and relevant experience being an advantage
  • Practical knowledge/experience of chemical analytical techniques - both theoretical and practical. Techniques include, but are not limited to: HPLC, UPLC, GCMS, NMR, GPC
  • Experience gained through working in a regulatory environment an advantage
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to produce clear and concise reports
  • Team player
  • IT literate (e.g Microsoft Office)
