Today, our exceptional Compliance Manager, Sue Flood, celebrates 20 years at Search! Hot on the heels of colleague Jane Robb who recently celebrated 25 years! We are proud of Sue’s loyalty to the business and there couldn’t be a better time to celebrate than on the day of our first ever Search Summit, conference and Awards.
Staff turnover in recruitment agencies is notoriously high, but at Search we are proud to say that we nurture loyalty and have a growing number of employees with long-service awards. Currently 25% of colleagues have worked with us for more than five years, which is rare in the recruitment industry.
On Sue’s first day at work, 28th February 2000, “Who let the dogs out” was at Number One and Manchester United were preparing to win the Premier league by a massive 13 points and Rangers won took the title in Scotland, finishing 21 points ahead of Celtic. Reality TV was never the same again with the launch of Big Brother!
What was your first year like working with Search?
My first year in Search saw some major expansion across Search with the opening of new offices and the expansion of Search’s recruitment agency services into brand new industries. My role changed significantly over that first year too. Starting off as a Researcher in Executive Search and Selection, I then moved across into a Resourcer role in our Technical team.
Towards the end of my first year, we won some business to recruit for the Army, so I was pleased to gain some experience working on that project too.
How has Search changed since you started??
Our business has grown massively since I joined. When I started, there were just three offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dunfermline and now we have 15 office locations in the UK! We had a presence in far fewer industries too, a lot less than the twenty or so that we operate within now
The Central Services team has expanded significantly since I started. What was once a small team is now over 70 strong!
How has recruitment evolved over your time with Search?
There are far more regulations now, which keep me busy as Compliance Manager. Recruitment was much more paper-based 20 years ago – placement paperwork was sent to Finance rather than done electronically. So, I’d say that advances in technology have changed the way we work. Social media was almost non–existent, there was no LinkedIn nor job boards, and advertising in newspapers was the main way that candidates looked for jobs.
What is your favourite thing about working with Search?
Definitely the people and the opportunities to develop. I’ve been very fortunate to have had a number of different roles including Resourcer, Recruiter, Systems Trainer and now Compliance Manager. I also really enjoy my job.
Do you have any other memories or stories about your time at Search you want to share?
Too many to list… Although, going through the first week of army training at Lichfield, including shared dormitory, scratchy blankets and marching on the parade ground will always have a “special” place in my memories.
Thank you, Sue Flood!
Mandy Bell, Search’s Business Solutions Manager, comments on Sue’s celebration saying “Sue’s commitment to getting things right along with her strong moral compass make her perfect for her role. These attributes along with her detailed understanding of the Search business, her sharp wit and sense of humour plus the ability to adapt to change are key contributors to her successful 20 years career with Search.
