Search Technology & Transformation launches series of Tech Smart events - With special focus on attracting Women into I.T careers

Search Technology & Transformation is gearing up to launch a series of Tech Smart events across Edinburgh and Glasgow over the first two weeks in November.

Held in partnership with leading tech players Avaloq and Incremental Group, the events will focus on how the tech industry can become more inclusive for women and other groups as organisations become more diverse.

The series follows Search Technology & Transformation’s Women in Tech 2018 report published in September, which closely analysed the impact of targets and initiatives to level the gender playing field within the UK’s tech sector. Despite the majority of employers reporting established targets and initiatives across their businesses, our research also revealed that women still made up just 21 percent of the average tech team.

With a particular focus on enabling women in tech, the events will shine a spotlight on the shortage of women in tech and the steps industry leaders can take to make careers within the sector more attractive to women.

We’ll be discussing a range of topics including why women who are an 80 percent fit with transferable skills don’t put themselves forward for emerging tech roles, and how we make our working culture and environment in tech more inclusive for female candidates. We’ll also discuss how women can be encouraged to see tech as an option for them as a career and how hiring organisations can positively discriminate without alienating your current teams.

Attendees can expect to receive a wealth of insight from some of Scotland’s leading tech experts, including:

  • Eileen McLaren, COO and Exec Director of Cognitive Geology
  • Craig McKay, Chief Product Officer at Mudano
  • Gill Scott, Head of Training Excellence at Avaloq
  • Neil Logan, CEO of Incremental Group
  • Paul Skovron of MD and Diversity & Inclusion Specialist at 3In Consulting

Kate McClorey, Managing Director for Search Technology & Transformation who will be chairing the event, said: “Although women are a growing a presence throughout the sector, our research echoes the challenges that many companies and recruiters still face.”

“Despite how many companies have rolled out targets and initiatives, we still see a shortage of women with the appropriate skills available in the employment market. It is for this reason that we continue to address the issue with industry leaders and female role models in tech.”

Gill Scott, Head of Training Excellence at Avaloq added: “I’m very happy to be partnering with Search Technology & Transformation to help encourage more women into tech. This sector undoubtedly offers many well-rewarded and fulfilling careers - particularly in comparison to those which have historically been assigned to women.”

“A tech career begins with the subjects studied at school, so it’s never too early to hear this message. The sector is currently missing out on a large pool of female talent, and it’s in everyone’s best interest to ensure this imbalance is readdressed.”

“Events like this present a significant opportunity for young women to hear directly from female leaders across the sector about their real experiences in career development across the sector, thus encouraging those on the fence to make informed choices about their future studies and careers,” she concluded.
