It’s been one week since International Nursing Day but the work never stops for the 659,000 nurses currently working in the UK. It is a profession that requires heart, determination and a genuine love of helping people as on their worst days, after long gruelling shifts, it is easy to question the reasons why they work in this industry.
For most nurses though, these doubts quickly fade away. To find out more about why a nursing career is so special, we asked three of Search’s longest serving nurses why they love working in this job so much.
Lara – Nursing for 38 Years
“Nursing is so much more than a job, it is a calling. As such, you need to really have a passion for making a difference in the lives of others - showing compassion and care to people who despair over their health and desperately need a word of reassurance and a listening ear.
“It brings me great joy to know that I can be there for others. So much so, I often forget to look at the clock and end up working overtime on a shift just to listen to my patients and be there for them.”
Idy – Nursing for 37 Years
“From the moment I began practicing as a nurse, I knew that a career in healthcare was what I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life. The opportunity to change the lives of others for the better is one that I would not trade for the world.
“I’m also truly grateful to Search Healthcare for their professionalism and support in my career. At the moment they are the only recruitment agency I work with, and for good reason!”
Ali – Nursing for 25 Years
“Nursing is my passion because I love interacting with people and making a difference. It’s so much more than a job, it is a life commitment. No matter which area of nursing you practice in, we all do our bit to contribute towards comforting patients and their families. That, to me is a day well spent.”
