Combining all good things into one, Liverpool is a vibrant and fast-growing city which seems to have it all – combining the best of city and country life, along with the lure of the beach and of course, The Beatles.

But that’s not all! Liverpool has also been named as one of the UK’s fastest growing hubs for digital companies as a government report reveals the increasing importance of technology to the economy.

In this blog, we take a close look at Liverpool’s Technology sector, and why you should consider relocating to pursue a career there.

The boom of Liverpool's technology sector

The importance of the technology sector to economic growth has been revealed in a project called Tech Nation, which looked into how the technology industry is growing across the UK. According to Tech Nation, the UK’s technology sector is expected to create more jobs than any other industry, with Liverpool playing a leading role in its growth.

The report found that digital job growth was predicted to outperform all other occupations by 2020, with 1.46 million people – 7.5 percent of the UK workforce – already employed in digital industries. Crucially, the industry has developed beyond London, with Liverpool identified as one of the fastest growing areas outside of the capital.

Furthermore, research by accountancy firm, RSM reveals that Merseyside and the Northwest saw a 30 percent surge in the number of new digital and tech companies over the course of 2017.

Why you should pursue a tech career in Liverpool

Liverpool is enjoying a renaissance, powered by the digital tech companies that operate within the city – in particular those that cluster around the Baltic Triangle district, which has recently been rated as the coolest UK suburb to live in by The Times.

Once a wasteland of disused warehouses, recent years have seen Liverpool become a place where creative ideas and digital dreams are born. Here, gaming, virtual reality and digital agencies are thriving, and the area’s transformation is much to the credit of the Baltic Creative Community Interest Company and Elevator Studios.

Liverpool boasts a blossoming start-up scene, with an average birth of 194 start-ups per year since 2011. Furthermore, Liverpool is also ranked 9th in the country for job growth at 31 percent. Tech Nation reports a total number of over 23,000 digital jobs in Liverpool, with the local tech sector’s growth potential currently sitting at nearly 80 percent.

In addition, the Government’s commitment to invest £556 million towards the Northern Powerhouse can only mean positive progression for Liverpool’s digital tech sector, thus making this city a great place for tech professionals to live and pursue a career.

What you need to consider before relocating to Liverpool

Liverpool has been voted as one of the best cities in the UK for work-life balance due to its cosmopolitan atmosphere, optimistic outlook, and friendly people. Likely most famous for being the birthplace of 60’s pop group, The Beatles, Liverpool earned the title of European City of Culture in 2008 and continues to grow and improve as a vibrant and exciting city in which to live and work.

Due to the large student population in Liverpool, affordable housing is quite easy to come by. Whether you’re looking to buy or rent, the average cost of a flat can vary from £600 for furnished accommodation in an average area of the city, to £1,300 per month for furnished accommodation in an expensive area of the city.

Transportation within the city consists of the Merseyrail train system, which connects other areas of Merseyside to different areas of the city via four main stations. Trains are every 15 minutes, making commuting in from the suburbs fast and easy. There’s also a comprehensive bus network. Traffic can get very busy in the city centre during rush hour so public transportation is preferable to driving.

In conclusion

If recent years have taught us anything, it’s that London is not the only playground for tech geeks and digital innovators. Liverpool has a rhythm and an energy all of its own – and as such has always moved to its own beat: attracting world class talent, encouraging new start -ups, and developing the next generation of creators, makers, gamers and ground-breakers.
