Goodbye working unhappy, hello doing what you love. Trust our specialists to make your job search easy.
This means that there are a lot of forms to fill out and this can prove to be a stumbling block some. Understandably, it can be daunting for any nurse when you first see the mountain of paperwork that you must fill in to successfully renew your registration with the NMC.
Being highly organised and disciplined should come naturally to a nurse but to help you with the finer details of what you should provide on your forms, here are Search Healthcare's tips on completing the revalidation paperwork.
Set up an NMC Online account and keep your contact details up to date. Make sure you know when your renewal is due and plan ahead to finalise when suitable training opportunities can be attended. Finally, make sure that you have all your supporting requirements to hand and keep them in safe location when the time comes for your appraisal meeting with a senior nurse. Make as many physical copies of forms, tables and certificates as possible and store them in an easily manageable folder.
Continual development is going to more important for nurses now than ever before. Training and self-improvement have always been essential parts of a nurse’s career either to progress through the bands or at the very least maintain their standards of care.
Now you have to prove and get credits for every one of those courses that they have traditionally done in the past. These can be through e-learning through sites like the Nursing Times or the online courses themselves. All training certificates must be obtained by the course provider and uploaded on the profile of the NMC. If the course isn’t credited, the course that you are doing will go towards your 35 hours of study. This shows that that there is no such thing as wasted learning during the revalidation process.
Keeping yourself continuously updated will be a requirement that all nurses are going to have to do throughout the crucial three-year period.
One of the seven compulsory steps is to evaluate your practice whilst providing five written pieces of reflection and discussion. This can be either positive or negative experiences you have encountered as both have their merits.
It is great that you can examine the positives of what you’ve done and look back on them with pride. But you still tend to learn quicker and remember more when things have gone wrong or focus on some of the negative sides of the job. This way, you can then look back on the practices performed by yourself and see what you would do differently.
Make sure that you are doing those reflections at several points throughout the year. Ensure that you are saving them and sitting down with another registered nurse to ensure that they are all validated. So when your revalidation does come up for renewal in three years time or whenever yours is due, you’ve got that information ready and it’s going to make that process a lot simpler for you.
