However, in the right circumstances temping can be a good career move. With the economy making a strong recovery, it is becoming an increasingly popular choice among the UK workforce, with 1.15 million people going out to work each week in temporary assignments.
Neil Blackman, divisional manager at Search Consultancy’s Office Services division for the North of England and Midlands, says that being a temp has numerous advantages. “People temp for all kinds of reasons and one of the main ones is the varied experience it brings. In a permanent job, you’re tied to one company, and most likely one department, meaning that your days, weeks and months can become repetitive. Being a temp allows you to complete assignments with a variety of organisations, allowing you to experience different working practices and build new skills. Critically, temping enables you to develop relationships with a wide network of professionals which, particularly in the financial services and legal industries, can prove useful as it’s a small world!”
Temping is often unappealing to many due to the perception of little job security and the risk of being left without work at short notice. But this shouldn’t put people off, as Neil explains: “Temps are generally treated well by organisations who realise that they would struggle to function without the flexibility that temporary employees bring.” However, Neil is quick to stress that it’s important to keep your options open. “For all its advantages, being a temp carries little in the way of guarantees, which is why it’s important to ensure that you’re registered with an experienced, reputable recruitment agency who can act quickly to place you in an alternative role, should the assignment you are working on comes to an end.”
As one of the UK’s leading recruitment agencies, Search Consultancy has hundreds of prestigious companies on its books, bringing a steady flow of requests for temps, especially in the Leeds and wider Yorkshire area where Neil is based. “The demand is huge and as a result we are always on the lookout for experienced temps who are keen to cut their teeth with a fresh assignment at a new company. In particular, legal secretaries and administration staff are always sought after, and we’re always looking for individuals who have qualifications and experience in this area.”
