David Holden, Divisional Manager at Search legal attended the Junior Law Division Forum over the weekend. He was invited to give a presentation to over 100 junior lawyers on improving their chances of success in the search for their ideal job. It was a great day with plenty of discussion! What do Private Practice firms look for in Junior Lawyers?
Know what you want – They will seek out junior lawyers who have realistic salary expectations with reliable links to the location.
Aptitude for Business Development – As you gain more experience, can you demonstrate business development initiatives and your desire to do this?
Be Ambitious – They’re looking for their future leaders. If you don’t have the desire and drive then someone else will.
How to Work with Legal Recruiters
Choose your recruiter wisely. Choose a specialist who understands the sector and has an excellent understanding of your local market. If they’re not clued up, then they won’t have the relationships to make those introductions for you.
Find the recruiter who has the most jobs in what you’re looking for, and in the right locations. You want to make sure your recruiter can cover the market using the people they know for you.
As a candidate you also have a big part to play here. Recruiters are looking for you to be excited about your job search and know what you want. If you can’t tell us what you’re looking for we won’t be able to find it!
Recruiters will look for certain signs, the most important is communication. Just as body language says more than what you actually say. How you return calls, respond, and even chase tells us a lot about just how important your job search is to you. We have the option to work with a lot of people, we want to work with the ones who truly want to work with us and value what we can do.
If you invest in a relationship with a recruiter, you’ll reap the rewards. They’ll help you present yourself in the best possible way, prepare for interviews and will proactively seek out opportunities for you.
