Competency Based Interviews
Competency Based Interviews are one of the most popular interview processes many employers are now using, so here's some background and tips to stay in control:
What is a competency?
A specific behaviour you demonstrate at work that makes you effective. How you do things, rather than what you've done, if you like. It demonstrates a mixture of knowledge, skills, motivation and personal characteristics.
Why are competency based interviews used?
Our individual skills, attributes and behaviours make us unique and influence the way we respond to events and pressure at work (and out of work). Handy stuff to know for your potential employer - and, for you (remember, an interview is a two-way street - is this role right for you?)
What is a competency-based interview?
If they don't tell you, you'll spot it quickly if they start asking broad-based questions. After general questions about you and/or your background, the questions often begin with
"Tell me about a time when...",
"Describe an occasion when...", or
"Can you give me an example of when you..."
You get the idea.
