Aberdeen & the Aberdeen Jobs Market
Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire has been Scotland’s most successful region for jobs and employment for many years, with this success largely dependent upon the oil & gas sector.  Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire continue to show strong demand for job vacancies and offers many opportunities for employment and career development, with an expanding economy and buzzing social scene.

The more recent economic wealth of Aberdeen has been built on the success of the offshore gas and oil industries, which has largely replaced the previous agriculture and fishing sectors, as it’s main source of jobs and wealth.  Approximately 85,000-100,000 jobs in Scotland are dependant on the oil and gas sector and there are still a large number of job opportunities in these sectors, including many engineering jobs throughout Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeen City’s population is around 203,000 and the population of the surrounding Aberdeenshire districts (now over 260,000 including Aberdeen city), has grown steadily as new homes and communities have been built or developed to cope with the increasing population resulting from the growth in the local economy.  However, Aberdeen remains one of the most expensive places to buy a new house in Scotland and the UK.

Key Employers & Job Sectors - Is it all ‘Oil & Gas’?
The Aberdeen economy and jobs market has more to offer than just the ‘oil and gas’ sector. Aberdeen has been ranked as the UK's most competitive city after London and is among the top three UK cities in terms of knowledge-based businesses. There are more than 400 internationally owned companies operating in the City of Aberdeen and more than 800 technology based companies throughout the wider Aberdeenshire area and north east Scotland.

Other strong job sectors in Aberdeen include Retail, Finance, Sales, Engineering, manufacturing, Health services, Agriculture and Telecoms.  The largest employers are still dominated by the oil sector and include Shell, Taqa, BP, Talisman Energy, Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council and the Craig Group.

The traditional industries of fishing and farming are still strong and Aberdeenshire’s food and drink industry exports unique products throughout the world and provide many jobs in the region. In 2008 whisky exports from the area exceeded £750m in value.

Living & Working in Aberdeen
Aberdeen is a thriving, cosmopolitan port in the North-east of Scotland.   Built at the mouth of two major Scottish rivers, the Dee and the Don, and covering an area of 188.46 square kilometres (72.76 square miles), the Granite City owes its distinctive appearance to the famous, locally quarried and widely exported, building material.

With bustling shopping malls, including the new ‘Union Square’ shopping centre in the heart of the city - a wide variety of entertainment and leisure amenities, and a vibrant arts scene - Aberdeen is a major retail, leisure and cultural centre.
First class road, rail, sea and air communications - London is only an hour's flight away - ensures the city, though Northerly, is not isolated.
