Structural Engineer Jobs
Jobs in Structural engineering cover areas such as structural analysis and design, structural mechanics, foundation design and properties of materials.
A job in structural engineering attracts those who wish to rise to the challenge of a creative profession and the many career challenges that accompany this. Structural engineers make a difference; they are people who enjoy innovation, a challenge, opportunities, responsibility and excitement in a varied career.
Your job would involve you seeing through structural engineering projects from design stage to construction and completion. Working as part of a team, you would first conceive a structure; considering strength, form and function – going on to choose appropriate materials - such as steel, concrete, brick or timber - calculating and checking to ensure that the construction will remain safe and serviceable for the length of its intended lifetime.
For most vacancies, you need a BEng or an MEng in civil or structural engineering that is accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or the Institution of Structural Engineers.
Structural engineers contribute towards shaping the world we live in, their jobs often involving work with architects, on the design, refurbishment and construction of all structures including houses, offices, hotels, offshore oil platforms, sports stadiums and bridges. They are also involved in the design and build of structures involved in the harnessing of power.
In the oil and gas and renewable energy industry, every project is unique and will involve the expertise of a number of professional people including structural engineers.
Within the established oil and gas sector – you may come across jobs requiring you to travel and work offshore, looking at the subsea structures, platforms, machinery or devices.
The renewable energy sector will also create a number of jobs for structural engineers – with the need to build wind harnessing structures as well as devices to capture wind and tidal power. An example of a job for a structural engineer in this industry would be looking at wind turbine technology - acting as engineer for foundation design, supply & installation including undertaking technical reviews of design basis, detailed design, fabrication methods, installation methods and design risk assessments.
Meanwhile a similar job within marine power will probably require experience of engineering design, construction and installation for marine and/or subsea structures. Your job would be to take responsible for the quality and the structural integrity of the design deliverables and to develop, test and evaluate theoretical designs.
