Today's the day young people across England, Wales and Northern Ireland begin to find out their A-level results. A decrease in applications for higher education is expected to mean a candidate driven market with many courses at universities across the country still available. So far there has been 416,000 university places confirmed - down 2% from 2016.

Despite national results expected to remain at the same level as last year, when about a quarter of all candidates received top grades. Changes to the qualifications system in England mean many A-levels are being decided by final exams, with no link to coursework or AS-levels.

Not getting the results you expect can seem like a disaster. But if you browse the Sunday Times Rich List, you’ll find a bevy of British billionaires and millionaires who have no qualifications or degrees as there is no right or wrong path to success.

One of the UK’s most high profile billionaires, Sir Richard Branson, famously left school with ‘no qualifications’. Branson suffered with dyslexia and quit school at just 15 years old. He soon set up the Virgin Empire which has itself seen both testing and tremendous times. 

Not having top exam marks hasn’t stopped Branson, who was knighted for advances in business and has an estimated worth of a whopping $5.1 billion. In a blog post on exams, he advised those not getting the results they’d hoped for to “Forget exam results (everybody else does sooner or later!).”

Another entrepreneur who has built a successful business (or two) without the top marks from exam results is Lord Alan Sugar. Lord Sugar’s one GCSE hasn’t stopped him amassing an estimated £1.4 billion personal fortune nor has music mogul Simon Cowell who despite only achieving three O levels (GCSEs) is worth £300m.
