Top 5 Career Lessons from your favourite Christmas Movies!

Everyone loves a good Christmas film at this time of year. You may have watched your favourites over and over again but have you ever thought about the career lessons that you could learn from them?

Here are our top 5 career lessons you can learn from your favourite Christmas movies!

1. Love Actually - Transform challenges into opportunities!

Admittedly, one could argue that this Christmas love fest is more of a lesson on what NOT to do in your career! While firing a staff member after she’s been harassed by a sleazy president is never a good idea, there are some nuggets of wisdom to be gleaned from this heart-warming tale of individuals coming together to share in the joy and love that Christmas brings.

If a cynical rock-star, who has been widely regarded as nothing more than a ‘Has-Been’, can transform a terrible love song into the Christmas number one, then you too can turn a challenge into an opportunity for success! Don’t be afraid to go after what you want, and remember that no dream is impossible!

Take initiative by volunteering to lead that presentation, manage a project or chase that business lead. Maintaining ownership over your responsibilities, will ultimately show the world that you are a proactive professional who is not afraid to lead the pack!

2. The Grinch - Diversity is vital!

Just like how the Grinch was ostracised by his fellow villagers, there will sometimes be mischievous colleagues who waste time putting others down in order to make themselves look good. Don’t be that person who criticises new starters or ignores awkward colleagues. Instead, aim to be like the little girl who befriends the grumpy fur ball and shows him how to integrate!

It is common knowledge that diversity enables organisations to innovate and adapt in the ever-changing world of business. Diversity of perspectives, experiences, cultures, genders, and age is essential to growth and prosperity in any company because it breeds innovation. So put yourself out there and get to know everyone you work with.

Furthermore, don’t give up on someone if they seem a little aloof and reserved on the surface. Because anyone can be won over with a little charm and patience! When in doubt, humour will be your greatest ally!

3. It's a Wonderful Life - Never doubt the importance of your role!

Following a series of unlucky events that lead George Bailey to believe that he has never fulfilled his dreams, his guardian angel shows him what life would be like had he never been born. Like him, some of us may have a tendency to doubt the importance of our role within an organisation. The lesson to be learned here is that no role in an organisation is insignificant!

So remember that you, and your work, matter. If you find yourself in a position of responsibility, a smooth operation requires cooperation from all members of staff, so treat everyone from the CEO to the intern with the same level of interest and respect.

4. Nightmare before Christmas - Respect transition!

When the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town grows tired of organising the world’s annual horror extravaganza, he escapes to Christmas Town in the hope of replacing Father Christmas. However, it soon becomes evident that his spooky skills do not translate very well into his role of bringing Christmas cheer to the world.

In life, it is inevitable that many of us will change jobs, or even careers! Instead of assuming that our past experience means we already know everything, we should listen to industry experts, be willing to try new ideas, and avoid becoming disheartened if a new job is more difficult than we anticipated. See it as an exciting new challenge to tackle and an opportunity to learn!

5. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Skill development is essential!

Chevy Chase stars in this family classic where every Christmas tradition goes seriously wrong for the Griswold family, from setting up the Christmas tree to putting up the Christmas lights.

Although common sense cannot be taught, it’s important to remember that skills can! So before you write up a fancy list of skills on your CV, be sure to do your homework beforehand. This doesn't mean that you have to pursue a degree, but you can look through a wide range of courses and resources that are right at your disposal and easily accessible in the information station that is Google!
