Juggling Work and Your Social Life: How Do You Do it?

Making sure that we stay happy and healthy at work and at home can be struggle during the lengthy working year. Stress from work can struggle to be contained just in the workplace, and at times we may feel like this can carry over through into our daily lives with our families. So how exactly do we manage to juggle our social and working lives to ensure that we have a healthy work life balance?

Continue to Be Social

When you’re stressed with multiple deadlines, you can often be left feeling like too much of your time is being dedicated to your work. You can go home carrying the stress and thoughts of the day’s activity, and this can often have you feeling like you are unable to talk to any friends or family. It is important for us to understand that we need to be able to maintain contact with others to keep us healthy and happy. Go see friends after your shift, or spend time after dinner watching a movie with family. Do something after your work day that you enjoy, and don’t let your work seep too much into your social life. Work is important, but your happiness is even more so.

Maintain a Positive Outlook

Above all, no matter how stressful things can be, you should keep your head held high and know that you are doing a great job. We often do not give ourselves enough credit for the amount of work that we do, and managing to complete numerous tasks every day deserves a good pat on the back. If you feel like you are having a bad day, don’t worry too much – look ahead and think about how you can improve and stay as positive as possible. Being negative will produce negative results, so always stay positive – things will always turn around when you’re working hard.

Take Holidays

You’re entitled in your job to some days off of work to spend as holidays. Take those days and use them well. How? That’s up to you! If you’re looking to spend more time with your family, maybe take them on a long weekend or a week’s holiday abroad for some rest and relaxation. Not seen some friends in a while? Go out there and have a great day out, dinner, and some nice social interaction. You’ll feel much better, refreshed, and ready to take on work head-on with a rested attitude.

Work Hours that Suit You

If you need a little more time at home, try not to take on working contracts that demand too much time from you. Many bosses can be very considerate if you have a family or commitments in the evenings, and will work with you to find a rota that better suits your lifestyle requirements. Working unsociable hours can be paid more as they are often undertaken during times that others do not work, however these do not suit everybody. Negotiate your hours, explain your situation, and ensure that you leave yourself enough time in the day rest, relax, and be with family and friends.

Work from Home

For some people, it may be possible to take an opportunity to work at home a few days of the week. This can be highly beneficial for those employees who may have young children. Many parents at work feel the stress of additional demands on them with young children, and being away from home can often feel difficult for those who are dealing with a young family. Working from home gives employees a chance to be able to stay at home in a comfortable environment and can help to reduce work stress as an occasional day of the working week. If you can take the opportunity to work from home for your employer, take it and see if it helps you feel more relaxed – you may be surprised how good working from the comfort of your own home can be.

Consider Part-Time Work

If full-time work is more of a struggle for you and your social commitments, why not consider working part-time jobs? Part time jobs are ideal for people who require certain times of the day free for other things, including family commitments. You can earn a great, stable income while working only a few days or hours of the week, and you often have a greater deal of flexibility in your hours. You will find it much easier to juggle work and your social life, and you’ll more than likely feel even better for it.
