Think you Couldn't Work in Sales? Think Again!
With so many unflattering stereotypes of sales professionals, you’d be forgiven for reacting negatively to job titles such as ‘sales advisor’, ‘sales manager’, and ‘sales representative’, which often conjure up images of Del Boy and his leopard print suitcase full of cheap watches.
However, this perception is unfair, because applying for a job in sales can often be the first step towards a lucrative and rewarding career. Paul Sharpe, a consultant within Search Consultancy’s Sales and Marketing division, says that people are often so quick to focus on the negative aspects of the role that they overlook the positive: “The Sales function is a hugely important part of any organisation, and without it few businesses would survive. For this reason, many companies understand the importance of recruiting good, hardworking sales people and retaining them.”
This means that the benefits of a sales job can heavily outweigh the negative factors. “For a start there’s fantastic earning potential, particularly if you’re prepared to work hard at getting good results. The recognition from management and peers is also far greater in a sales role than in any other department, which you’d expect given that the sales team keeps revenue flowing in. Furthermore, in a sales role you can often progress up the management ladder much more quickly than in any other function.”
So why aren't more people giving a career in sales a go? “A lot of people think that to succeed in sales you have to be pushy and to a degree, manipulative,” explains Paul. “But the reality is that doing well in sales requires determination combined with an outgoing personality and a positive attitude, characteristics that lots of people possess.” Having prior sales experience is a bonus, but not always essential: “Sales skills are often transferrable from other roles, so although sales experience is preferred, more often than not candidates from any background where customer service played a part can be considered.”
Convinced yet? If you are, then Search Consultancy currently has a number of sales roles available throughout the UK suitable for ambitious and hard working candidates. “I’m working on a Field Sales Advisor role with a major home media brand offering a variety of services which every household in the UK either has or needs. Therefore it’s a fairly easy sell, and when you throw in the added bonus of a company Ford Focus, it really is an excellent opportunity. There is potential to do this role from all over the UK, so I’d love to hear from sales professionals across the country who may be interested.
“The second role I’m working on is a Direct Sales Representative with a company specialising in collecting charity contributions. Again, this role based at various locations throughout the UK, but unlike most charity collectors who operate in the street, this role is based at venues such as shopping centres and train stations where people are a lot more receptive to being approached. Offering an industry leading uncapped remuneration package, this role is a great opportunity for sales professionals who not only want to enjoy great earning potential, but also make a difference to a number of worthwhile causes.”
