Search tackles cancer in the workplace
According to statistics published by cancer charity Macmillan, over 100,000 people of working age are diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year, and there are currently over 700,000 people of working age living with a cancer diagnosis.
For this reason, at Search, along with JMW Solicitors LLP, we have partnered with them to offer employers the opportunity to attend a ‘managing cancer in the workplace’ workshop.
The breakfast seminars will show employers how to legally, practically and compassionately manage a cancer diagnosis in the workplace. We, along with JMW Solicitors have pledged to donate £1 each to Macmillan for every delegate that attends.
The workshops will take place in venues across England, including Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Leicester and Sussex and will cover a selection of topics examining the practical and legislative aspects of managing cancer at work. Liz Cotton, partner at JMW Solicitors, will be on hand to explain the legislation and obligations of employers and a representative from Macmillan will focus on the practical implications.
Debbie Caswell, Search's Managing Director for England, said: “Cancer affects every aspect of life, including work, so it is vital for employers to have a robust plan in place in order to support their staff. It is very important to us to provide help and advice to our clients, not just by helping them to find the best candidates for vacancies, but to support them in managing and nurturing their employees. We are very proud to support Macmillan and will make a donation for every delegate.”
The two-and-a-half-hour sessions – which will give businesses the opportunity to network – are the latest in a series of informative workshops on employment legislation organised by Search.
Liz Cotton added: “JMW is thrilled to be partnering with Search and Macmillan for these informative and interactive sessions on ‘Managing Cancer in the Workplace’. Aimed at HR advisors, the sessions will cover the various legal and other wider obligations that arise where an employee is living with cancer and provide useful guidance for the delegates on how best to manage some of the thornier issues that crop up in this area.”
Through this initiative, we hope that employers will be able to obtain a deeper understanding of what it means for someone when they are diagnosed with cancer and be better equipped to support them.
